Recommended Reading: Lagoon by Nnedi Okorafor

Just look at that cover! Two years ago, I started searching harder for books I knew must exist, but that I hadn’t been told to read. Lagoon by Nnedi Okorafor did exactly what I was craving at the time: put humans and the rest of nature on equal footing. I cried reading the first chapters; they were so beautiful.

Also, it’s so refreshing to have aliens make first contact somewhere that isn’t a major city in the US or England! It’s so eurocentric, white supremacist, and patriarchal to assume aliens are going to show up and prefer making contact with the leaders of colonial nations. PFFFFFFT.

So check out Lagoon! Come for the cool new aliens, a story set in Lagos, and a willingness to respect animals in their own right, and stay for the awesome plot, characters, and adventure.
